Full Review

The Mares Puck Air dive computer is the most advanced of the 3 offerings in the Mares Puck range, being an air-integrated dive computer. It offers many of the same functions and the same dive modes as the Mares Puck wrist dive computer: Air, Nitrox, and Gauge with the capability of using 1 Nitrox mix programmable from 21% – 50%. There are also 3 Personal Correction Factor settings you can choose from to build more caution into your dives.

Useablility and Features

You’ve got to love the Mares tag line ‘Just Add Water’ because with the Puck range it really rings true; these computers are feature rich but amazingly simple to use. The Mares Puck Air dive computer employs the same single button operation as other Puck models and, like them, it is extremely intuitive and logical to use; there are no strange button combinations for setting parameters like you see on some other dive computers. It’s not as clunky looking either, but has a far more streamlined and smooth appearance. It has 10 operating modes, 9 of which are the same as the Puck wrist, with the Puck Air also possessing a Set Alarm mode which enables you to disable the audible alarms, except for the Deepstop, which is always active.

Two Air Reserve alarms can also be set which will give you various visual and audible alarms. You can set your Reserve High at between 80 and 120 bar and also set a minimum reserve with the Reserve Low setting from 50 to 70 bar. When your tanks reach the value set in your reserve setting the alarm will continuously sound.

Nitrox dives are managed in much the same way as Air dives are, although the Puck Air does display more information, all of which is crucial to the diver using Nitrox, including the PP02 alarm and the Oxygen toxicity alarm.

While decompression stops are not really recommended while using the Mares Puck Air, the 3 graphical displays which indicate the required action you must take would be pretty handy if you happened to exceed the decompression levels and found yourself in a tight spot. For those divers who like to stay really close to the recommended decompression limits, the Deepstop alarms and icons are invaluable; sounding and flashing at one minute intervals and different depths, according to your dive profile.

The Puck Air has a dive planner which simply allows you to scroll through various decompression limits to view your allowable bottom time at certain depths, ranging from 12 to 48 metres. The on-board logbook records all important dive data as well as whether you violated the recommended ascent rate, and can store around 40 hrs of information. The PC interface is optional, and any required software upgrades are downloadable from the Mares web site by the user.

Backlighting for the Puck Air is on demand, activating for around 4 seconds, however another setting allows the diver to change the screen contrast to further customize the computers readability by minimizing ghosting.
